What is Drag? As famous as Drag has become over the last decade, there’s still a lot of confusion about exactly what Drag is and what it’s all about? Sure it’s entertaining, but is there more? The answer is a resounding “yes.”

 

Drag is a type of performance art. It’s also about self-expression. According to the most famous Supermodel of the World, RuPaul, “Drag emphasizes self-expression and embracing one’s identity,” all encapsulated in his signature phrase “You better work!”


Traditionally, Drag is performed cross gender, by both men and women. Men, dress in elaborate costumes, hair and make-up, adopt female personas and showcase their creativity, humor and talent, often lip-sinking to music or performing live. Women also do Drag, not as women but as Drag Kings.

 

RuPaul’s definition of Drag “The Essence of Drag” is expressed in the acronym C.U.N.T., Charisma, Uniqueness, Nerve and Talent. These are the key elements which make a good Drag performance. They encapsulate the spirit and skill needed to succeed in Drag.


But Drag is also about Empowerment allowing performers to embrace their own identities and challenge societal norms. Drag is often irreverent, emotionally charged, even melodramatic but always a revelation. Thanks to “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” Drag has become a mainstream form of entertainment, helping bring LGBTQIA+ issues and struggle awareness to a wide audience.
